Jack Halfon arrived in South Africa in 1978 with a total of R300 in his pocket. After previous ventures, he founded Atlas Finance in 1994, with a view of providing affordable credit to the mass market who’d been largely excluded from legitimate, formal financial services. Jack’s own family values have always been the guiding principles with which he’s run his business. Under his leadership, the business has expanded steadily to the extent that today Atlas Finance is over 310 outlets-strong and is the leading independent microfinancier in South Africa, having served over 3 million clients. Jack is a family man, valuing time with his family be it at week-day lunches, shabbat dinners, family holidays or around the boardroom table with his daughter, son and son-in-law who are in the business. He is an avid photographer and has traveled the world with his wife in pursuit of photographic opportunities, photographing the interesting people he has met along the way. His second coffee table book is due for publication this year. I’ve always been entrepreneurial and commercially minded, but for me, business has never been only about building companies or creating financial success. It has always been about people, relationships and creating opportunities that have a lasting impact. Today, I live in the United States, where I focus on connecting exceptional South African talent with businesses around the world. I’m passionate about showcasing the incredible ability and potential of South Africans, helping global organisations grow while creating meaningful opportunities for people back home. Although my career has taken me across countries and cultures, South Africa remains the place I call home and a fundamental part of who I am. My journey has taught me the value of staying connected to your roots while thinking globally and of using success to open doors for others. I’m driven by building meaningful relationships, developing people, solving complex challenges and bringing opportunities to those who may not otherwise have access to them. I believe that success is most meaningful when it is shared — when the businesses we build, the relationships we develop and the opportunities we create leave a positive and lasting impact on the people and communities around us.
