I serve as Colonel Ze-ev Krein in the Directorate for Priority Crime Investigation (DPCI), better known as the Hawks, South Africa’s foremost investigative body mandated to address serious organised crime, corruption, financial offences, and narcotics. Over the course of my career, I have had the privilege of leading specialised forensic, cyber, and narcotics units within the South African Police Service (SAPS), with the objective to protect our citizens and ensure that justice prevails.
My path began in forensic science, where I led one of the country’s key forensic units. During that time, I contributed scientific analysis that directly supported the conviction of a serial killer and other violent offenders work that gave grieving families closure and reinforced the essential role of science in modern justice. Later, as commander of a cybercrime unit, I was tasked with confronting the fast-evolving world of digital crime, safeguarding South Africans from online fraud, technology-driven exploitation, and transnational threats. Today, as a commander of Narcotics for the Hawks, I coordinate national and international investigations into some of the most dangerous criminal networks confronting our region.
While these responsibilities are demanding, they are never undertaken alone. Every success is built on the courage and dedication of colleagues who risk their lives daily, whether in intelligence or frontline enforcement. If I were to be recognised through the Jewish Achievers Awards, it would not be only as a personal accolade, but as a testament to the Hawks, SAPS, and all law-enforcement professionals who sacrifice to keep South Africa secure.
Innovation has also been a hallmark of our work. I have spearheaded a forensic initiative that builds chemical-signature databases of heroin and methamphetamine to track supply chains, disrupt syndicates, and strengthen regional and global cooperation. This project, supported by international partners, demonstrates how South Africa can lead with scientific excellence in combating organised crime. Yet again, its value lies not in my role, but in the collective vision of investigators, chemists, and partners who made it possible.
As a member of South Africa’s Jewish community, my work is guided by values deeply rooted in Jewish tradition: integrity, responsibility, and the pursuit of justice. At a time when antisemitism is rising globally, this nomination carries special meaning. It affirms that our community is not only resilient, but actively engaged in protecting society at large. Recognition in this forum would highlight the importance of justice and protection not just for Jews, but for every citizen who deserves to live in safety and dignity.
Vision:
For Myself
A defender of truth. Truth brings justice, restores dignity to communities, and anchors society against corruption and violence. I will continue using science, law, and technology to confront the most complex threats to our nation.
For the Hawks
An organisation of integrity, fairness, and efficiency, operating without fear or favour. The Hawks must stand as a protector of justice, trusted by the public and unyielding against those who undermine the rule of law. Building capacity through technology and innovation is vital, ensuring we remain ahead of organised crime, corruption, and cyber threats.
For South Africa
A country where corruption, dangerous ideologies, and hypocrisy are fought with all our might, so truth and justice prevail. Only then can we create a society that is safe, harmonious and fair. One where opportunity is shared, the vulnerable are protected, and all South Africans can thrive in dignity and peace.
