Sean is an investor and entrepreneur, with over 20 years experience successfully investing in sub-Saharan Africa. After completing law and finance degrees at Wits University, and an MPhil at the Judge Institute of Management Studies at Cambridge, Sean spent several years in investment banking with Credit Suisse, UBS, and HSBC.
Sean left the world of banking largely out of a sense of frustration. Frustration first and foremost at never being responsible for the implementation of the transactions he was advising on, and therefore not being actively involved in the long-term success and profitability of those opportunities. And secondly, frustration at seeing stellar South African businesses not reaching scale – not for the lack of talent, vision or prospects, but rather for the lack of capital to grow and passionate champions to back them.
Sean decided to found Marlow to bring his skill set back home, and enable bright local entrepreneurs and operators to reach scale and success, both locally and internationally.
True to Sean’s original spark, Marlow’s investment philosophy continues to be to build exceptional businesses with proven entrepreneurs. By identifying businesses with strong cash flows, sound growth prospects and compelling underlying value propositions, and with stellar leadership, Marlow works actively with existing management to build businesses for the long term. It is a formula that has worked, and Marlow has achieved an unparalleled record of success over almost 20 years, without ever downsizing a business, without a single business failure, and without ever losing money on an investment.
On top of that, Sean has ensured that Marlow always always thinks of the responsibility that comes with being an investor, and ensures that their portfolio companies perform on employment and environmental impact metrics.
This is why exceptional entrepreneurs keep choosing Marlow as a partner.
Marlow has been involved in some of the most iconic transactions in the South African market – from the founding of Teraco (Africa’s first ever data neutral co-location data centre) to Mintails (sold to DRD Gold and responsible for the re-processing of gold, uranium and sulphuric acid from Johannesburg’s old mine dumps, as well as the environmental rehabilitation thereof) and Glint Pay (a fintech which has monetised gold bullion and recently received a large strategic investment from Sibanye Gold).
Sean is father to three incredible sons, an avid reader and a CrossFit athlete (recently finishing 1st in South Africa, and 2nd in Africa, in the 2025 Crossfit World Championships). In his youth he was a competitive tennis player, representative cricket player, and received his Cambridge Blue for golf.
Vision: I would love to leave South Africa better than I found it – across business, nature, impact and arts.
My life mission has been to back South Africa’s amazing skills, human capital and technology to improve the lives of the majority of South Africans and beyond. Only sometimes does our amazing talent get recognized on a global scale, and then often the benefits don’t accrue locally. We have recently decided to grow the firm further and also grow our mandate towards impact investing, in an attempt to further benefit all citizens.
Additionally, we are working on an anti-poaching project in the Waterberg with a Dutch university that, if we can bring it to commercial application, could be the single largest step towards the eradication of poaching that South Africa has ever seen.
Ultimately my aim is to be a good role-model for my children, across multiple facets of life, and to leave a legacy of which they can be proud.
