The Human Theatre Podcast

My name is Kelsey Buchalter. I am a Nutrition Network Practitioner, Sankofa Peer Recovery Coach, TEDx speaker, singer-songwriter, actor & dancer, and host of “The Human Theatre” Podcast.

My journey into this field was not conventional. For over twenty years, I was caught within the standard of care, struggling with an eating disorder and other health challenges. Despite countless interventions, I remained trapped until I took my health into my own hands. Through a simple dietary intervention, I experienced a profound transformation: not just physically, but mentally and emotionally. For the first time, I felt alive.

This experience revealed to me the biological underpinnings of mental health and revolutionised my understanding of what we call “mental” health: ‘mental’ health IS physical health.

I use the phrase “reverse-engineering mental health” to describe my approach: stabilising the biology to stabilise the psychology. It is this lived experience, combined with my professional trainings, that now informs all of my work.

My business is built on two pillars: my coaching practice and “The Human Theatre” Podcast.

In my coaching, I integrate nutrition, lifestyle medicine, metabolic health, and eating disorder recovery, offering clients personalised support that blends evidence-based science with creativity and empathy. My goal is not only to help people heal but to empower them to become their own health advocates.

Through my podcast, I broaden this mission, creating a space for open dialogue about health, resilience, and what it means to be fully human. I interview world-class experts, share insights, and give voice to stories that inspire others to question, learn, and grow.

Against the current backdrop of universal mental health struggles, I feel it irresponsible of me to remain silent about the physiological foundations of true human health.

My vision is to bridge the gap between the latest scientific literature and the often outdated or incomplete conventional wisdom that so many people rely upon.

By translating science into accessible, actionable insights, I aim to dismantle stigma and provide people with the tools they need to reclaim their vitality.

I believe I was nominated for the Jewish Achiever Awards because my work embodies resilience, innovation, and service: values deeply embedded in Jewish tradition. Guided by tikkun olam, I have turned my personal struggles into a platform for healing and advocacy, helping others find strength, clarity, and purpose. My dream is to one day create an integrative mental health clinic and health optimisation retreat that unites science, lifestyle, creativity, and community under one roof. At its core, my mission is to de-mystify mental health, showing that it is not a character flaw but an integral part of human health.

What would make me a worthy winner in the eyes of the judges is not simply my personal story, but the impact I strive to create for others. I represent the possibility that struggle can be transformed into service, that healing can spark purpose, and that even in the darkest places, light can be found and shared. Winning this award would not be a recognition of me alone, but of the countless individuals whose journeys I aim to honour and uplift through my work.

My vision for the future is to change the global mental health paradigm. For too long, mental health has been treated as separate from physical health, when in reality the two are inseparable. My goal is to normalise the understanding that mental health is biology, and biology is health. By shifting the focus towards prevention, nutrition, lifestyle, community, and environment, I envision a world where people are empowered to heal at the root, rather than managed at the surface. For myself and my business, this means building bridges: between science and lived experience, between conventional wisdom and emerging research, and between the individual and their innate capacity to thrive. My dream is to one day create an integrative mental health clinic and health optimisation retreat: a space where science, lifestyle medicine, creativity, and community converge to support true healing. For South Africa, I see extraordinary potential. Our country is already abundant with the very foundations of health: sunlight, natural rhythms, community, resilience, and diverse healthful nutrition. South Africa has the chance to become the health capital of the world: leading by example in how we integrate ancestral wisdom with modern science. We can harness our unique strengths to pioneer a new model of care that not only transforms our own nation but inspires global change. Ultimately, my vision is a future where no one is left to suffer in silence, where health is reclaimed as a human birthright, and where South Africa shines as a beacon of what is possible when we return to the fundamentals of being human.
