I would describe myself as an entrepreneur who has always believed in the power of vision, teamwork, and community. Although I began my career in accounting, I soon realised that my passion lay in building businesses and creating opportunities for others and myself. Over the years, I have been involved in diverse sectors such as automotive, retail, food, and property. Each venture has been shaped by collaboration with trusted partners, associates and with focus on growth, purpose and integrity.
In 1986, I joined Safe-T-Tyre and, together with my mentor Joe Epstein and his son Hylton, grew it into a regionally significant company employing over 350 people. Following its sale to Goodyear SA, I served as a director of Hi-Q Automotive before running my own business, Auto Fitment Centre. In retail, I was privileged to serve as a director of Seattle Coffee Company, working alongside its dynamic leadership
team.
In 2010, I partnered with Arnold Garber, the visionary behind KosherWorld, to establish KosherWorld Supermarket. Today, it is part of the OK Franchise Division, itself a subsidiary of Shoprite Checkers. This venture has grown into much more than a supermarket; it is a hub of Jewish life, proudly flying Israeli flags, playing Hebrew music, and supporting a supply chain that sustains families and businesses across South Africa. Property development has also remained central to my journey, with a focus on creating spaces that build community and generate jobs.
I believe I was nominated for this award primarily for commitment to communal life. From expanding kosher access in mainstream outlets to ongoing support of different Jewish institutions, I have sought to align business with meaning. Winning this award would affirm that true leadership lies in collaboration, community, and bringing to life the vision of KosherWorld.
My vision for the future is for KosherWorld to continue providing high-quality service, products, and innovation to the Jewish community in Johannesburg and across South Africa.
Generating employment remains central, as I believe businesses must not only serve their customers but also create livelihoods and stability.
My vision is to continue contributing as long as I am able to, with valid contribution to the business and the wider community. I see KosherWorld remaining innovative, service-driven, and inspiring to future entrepreneurs, while creating secure jobs and being a place where the community can always access kosher products with ease.
On a broader level, I believe South Africa is undergoing a cathartic process, in time we will see the emergence of a new, brighter beginning for all South Africans. I will know that we are on the right path when EL AL lands at Johannesburg International and the exchange of people and ideas will flow again between South Africa and Israel.
