Dr. Trevor Hurwitz, Order of Canada recipient, pioneered neuropsychiatry in British Columbia, establishing Canada’s largest program and advancing clinical care, research, education, and specialist training over four decades.
I am a neuropsychiatrist, Clinical Professor at the University of British Columbia, and Medical Director of the BC Neuropsychiatry Program, specializing in complex disorders at the interface of neurology and psychiatry.
I have been nominated for the Professional Excellence Award in recognition of more than four decades of leadership and innovation in neuropsychiatry. I established the British Columbia Neuropsychiatry Program, which has developed into the largest program of its kind in Canada, providing highly specialized care for individuals with complex disorders at the interface of neurology and psychiatry. As its Medical Director, I have helped establish neuropsychiatry as a recognized clinical and academic subspecialty, developed an accredited fellowship that trains the next generation of neuropsychiatrists, and contributed extensively to research, education, and mentorship. I have raised approximately $5 million to support research and have devoted my career to improving care for patients with complex and frequently misunderstood neurological and psychiatric disorders. These contributions to Canadian medicine, education, research, and patient care were further recognized by my appointment to the Order of Canada in 2026.
My vision for the future is to build upon more than four decades of work in neuropsychiatry by ensuring that the clinical, academic, research, and training programs I have developed continue to flourish for future generations. Professionally, I remain committed to advancing neuropsychiatry, mentoring and training the next generation of specialists, pursuing meaningful research, and improving care for patients with complex and often poorly understood disorders. Personally, I want to devote increasing attention to mentorship, philanthropy, and giving back to the communities that have shaped my life. My commitment to the South African Jewish community is reflected in my role as a founding partner of KosherWorld, an investment intended not merely as a commercial undertaking but as a contribution to sustaining and strengthening Jewish communal life in South Africa. More broadly, my vision for South Africa is of a country founded upon good governance, a rules-based order, transparency, and accountability at every level of public administration, creating the conditions in which all South Africans and their communities can prosper.
